Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I make French fun and easy to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn the student's French level and his/her learning style.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will provide a range of choices in topics and assignments. The student will first learn how to learn.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will use learning through activities, games, songs, etc. Using the self-monitoring techniques. I will set a high expectation for the student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will adapt the concept to real life to make it practical and easier for the student.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Learning to know my student and what he/she likes. Establishing trust. Assure the student that he/she can learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make it fun and avoid staying on the same subject for long. I use stories and games to help the student understand. Encourage the student to use his creativity to give his feedback on the subject. We will switch roles of Student/Teacher.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Student feedback. Asking the student to explain the material in his own words.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Define a clear goal and purpose. Assure the student that he/she is not perfect and the most important thing is to learn from mistakes.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I will define the needs first and adapt the best method to the needs. Then, let the student practice what he learned through his feedback. We will always review the old material before the new ones.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use a computer, books, a dictionary, songs, and plays.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

We write the difficult words or expression. Read aloud. Encourage the student to read more from different interesting books.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Asking questions to the student, and allowing him/her to ask questions. I will use the student-centered learning method.
