As a student at Iowa State University, I started tutoring as a way to earn extra money for school. I soon found that greatly enjoyed helping others learn and succeed. Since that realization, I have sought out other opportunities to teach and have gained experience teaching in a variety of environments and subjects. While at ISU, I led small-group tutoring sessions in organic chemistry and algebra. I also worked as a teaching assistant in a genetics laboratory. After graduation, I continued teaching while serving in the Peace Corps. I developed and taught my own English class and worked in local classrooms delivering lessons in health, science, and environmental conservation. I am excited to be tutoring again and helping individual students meet their educational goals!
In my free time, I enjoy reading, baking, and running. I love meeting new people and learning new things.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that learning should be self-motivated. I work to help students meet their own educational goals by meeting students where they are and finding ways to make learning engaging and easy for them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a typical first session, I like to spend the first few minutes getting to the student. Then, I spend some time with the student going over his/her motivation for seeking tutoring services, his/her learning goals and desired outcomes from tutoring, and the ways he/she learns best. Finally, I spend time going over material with the student to get a good understanding of where he/she is at. At the end of each session, I like to check in with the student and ask about what he/she would like to focus on in the next session.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will come up with a variety for methods to learn and review the subject. Examples could include hands-on activities, instructional videos, or the use of other outside resources.
