What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe in instilling a passion for lifetime learning into my students. One way I instill this passion is by being a model lifetime learner for my students.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The initial session would be used to find out from the parent and the student collectively and independently the primary objectives for future sessions. Find out the learning style of the student, as well as tools and resources needed to achieve goals.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by showing them how to properly utilize the resources needed to improve learning comprehension of any subject area.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would keep a student motivated by continuously acknowledging the progress made during tutoring sessions and in the classroom.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
After identifying the key skill or concept the student has difficulty with, I would ensure the student that the objective is attainable, and we'd create a plan to achieve it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
When students are struggling with reading comprehension, I encourage them to use their critical thinking skills to understand to primary purpose of the passage.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
One of the techniques I use to be sure a student completely understands material is to have them explain or teach the material back to me in their own words.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build a student's confidence in a subject by consistently working on the subject and acknowledging progress along the way until it has been mastered.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by what they already know, what they need to know and how much they have the ability to learn. I push students to achieve their highest potential, and I never hold them back if they are ready to soar above grade level.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I meet the student at their level, and expand from their weakest points while maintaining the strongest points.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The materials used are based on the student's learning style and study habits. I prefer to use reference materials from the classroom as well as hand-on materials such as books and study guides.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The strategies I have found to be the most helpful would be understanding the student's learning style and ability to retain the information given beforehand.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would reassure the student that in time, and with hard work, they will be doing very well in the subject area.
