Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Thomas in Winnetka, IL
The student and I reviewed his logarithms and then looked ahead in his book to cover new material. He will be missing his math class tomorrow so hopefully this keeps him up to date with his classmates. His next section dealt with trigonometry. Converting decimal degrees to degrees, minutes, and seconds; understanding radian measure; the relation between angular and linear movement; and trig functions on acute angles were the topics we covered. I am very impressed with his mastery of past material and his quickness to understand these new topics. He is doing great!

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Kiera in Winnetka, IL
We covered the practice sheets for the student's test. Predominantly, we worked on the factoring, logarithm, and exponent questions. These are the key areas that he needs to work on, so we are going to review them again at the next session. He is very capable of solving the application problems, and he just needs to work on solving factoring, logarithm, and exponent questions.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Yeojun Caleb in Winnetka, IL
We did lots of practice with sine and cosine graphs and the various possible transformations. We reviewed how to read an equation in y=A*sin(wx+P)+B form and graph it and also vice versa. We did several word problems as well. The student seems to have a good understanding on this concept and has a quiz on it this week.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Anuradha in Winnetka, IL
This was our first session so the student brought me up to speed on her Pre-Calculus class. She explained that they usually work from the book and she wanted to cover concepts they had already learned that she had questions about. We started with the vectors chapter and worked our way through the sections doing several examples from the book and from online tutorials. I asked her to bring a completed test next time, so we can review it. Next Monday, we plan to go over the material that is being studied in class.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Shulamith in Winnetka, IL
We began by reviewing the basic idea behind the unit circle and how it shapes the meaning of sin and cos. We considered what the unit circle means in terms of the domain and range of trig functions. We then covered inverse trig functions to prepare for the student's test. She didn't have a grasp on what inverses are in general, so we explored the concept a bit before applying it to trigonometry. She had trouble evaluating inverse trig functions because she still doesn't know the values on the unit circle. I reviewed the unit circle with her and highlighted the patterns, but ultimately it's something she needs to study on her own.
