I have a passion for helping people and a natural understanding of mathematics. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to use my natural mathematics abilities to help people. I feel I can translate my knowledge of math very well to other individuals who may be struggling with the material. I can make it fun and relatable. I have tutoring experience and pride myself in the success of my students. Math is everywhere in the world, and understanding it can give a greater understanding of life as a whole. I hope my students not only gain a better understanding of the material in the class room, but they gain an understanding of the divinity and beauty of math. Too many young students are afraid of math class because teachers tend to isolate the material from real world situations. I expect all my students will become self-motivated learners of mathematics as soon as they realize how to apply it in their daily lives. I am looking forward to the opportunity to make a difference.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Find the student's genuine interests and relate the material to that. Kids learn much better when they can understand why they're learning what they are.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know them. Ask for their interests, the classes they do well in, and their feelings towards math. It's so much easier to teach someone when you know whom you are teaching. Then I would begin giving examples of problems that they need help with, in a way that relates to their interests.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will try to make the students see math in their own interests. Math is everywhere in the world and if you can get a student to find it in their own interests, they will begin to see the importance of math everywhere and become more independent in learning it.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would continuously emphasize the importance of the material the student is learning in the classroom by giving examples that relate directly to the students’ interests. This way students will think about the material whenever they think about their interests. Associating material and interests like that makes students motivated without even realizing it.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would watch the student work through a problem and take a mental note of the problem. Then I would give the student a real-world example that emphasizes the issue the student is having. That way the student will have more than just the numbers to think about the next time they encounter a similar problem.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Communication is key. You need to be able to talk to and relate with your student in order to teach them most effectively. You need to be able to understand the student's individual issues, which can only be attained with communication.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would help relate it to the real world. I am a math tutor, and I know a lot of students that hate math love sports. By teaching these students about the math in sports, they become more engaged because they are learning about their interests and not just numbers. By associating course material with students’ interests, the students will constantly be reminded of the material when thinking of their interests and, more importantly, be reminded of their interests when looking at the material.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would give the students a quiz at the end of the material with 4 review questions, and a 5th question that is beyond the material, but uses the tools the students already know. If they can apply their knowledge to problems beyond the material, I would be very confident the student could apply their knowledge to the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I will continue to go over problems until it is easy for the student. Practice makes perfect in mathematics. I will make practice interesting, and as the students realize their potential they will become more confident in themselves. I am very motivated and excited about mathematics, and if I can translate that emotion to my students, then I could expect them to learn quickly and build confidence.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would ask the students to answer some pre-session questions that relate to the material. I will watch the students work through the problems and keep a mental note of their mistakes. I will be able to see where the students are going awry, then give them real world examples that will correct their issues. As the session goes on I will evaluate the students’ learning styles and adjust how I teach them accordingly.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I know there is no unanswerable question in math. Any individual can figure it out, all it takes as a tutor is patience and introspection. I will reframe and rework problems so that they address each student's individual problems. I will make adjustments to the type of problems I give to the student until he/she understands it. It may take time, but with patience and introspection, you can address every student’s mathematical issues.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I am a pen and paper learner. I will come prepared with practice problems, a calculator, and a blank notebook. Other than that, all I need to tutor my students is my eyes, ears, and mouth.
