How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

Your child may be required to take the ISEE, or the Independent School Entrance Exam, if they want to attend a prestigious independent elementary, middle, or high school. This exam challenges students in several ways, covering a multitude of academic areas. There are five sections on the exam: quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, math achievement, reading comprehension, and an essay. These subjects each have their difficulties, but with Los Angeles, California, ISEE tutors, your child can receive the help they need to prepare for this important test. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an available ISEE tutor.

The verbal reasoning section requires students to make decisions based off of their knowledge of how sentences are constructed, their knowledge of synonyms, and other verbal practices. The reading comprehension section asks students to identify parts of a passage, like main theme, tone, inferences, supporting ideas, and others. The essay will provide a prompt for your child to use their analytical and persuasive writing skills. If reading and writing are not your student's strong suit, a private tutor can go over how to identify style, logic, and other themes in a passage of text with them. They can bring in a practice ISEE exam, and they can explain how the test is written and how to identify the important information from the text to get the correct answers. Your child can receive the individualized assistance they need in preparation for the exam from Los Angeles ISEE tutors.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Abbi in Los Angeles, CA
We spent the session reviewing the arithmetic that will be on the test, in Ch. 9 of her prep book. We did not cover the topics she already knew and spent more time on fractions and converting decimals/fractions/percentages. She has a good grasp of the material and learned it very quickly. She may need more help with percent increase or decrease. Next session we will do another timed essay, strategies for sentence completion, some basic algebra and geometry. We should also have time for a vocab review and look at word problems practice.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jonathan in Los Angeles, CA
Today student 1 and I focused on pacing strategies, and methods to best attack the vocabulary and reading comprehension sections of the test. We split the test into three ten minute sections, and worked on developing an even pacing through each question. Afterwards, we explored two new math concepts: basic algebraic equations and pattern recognition in shapes. Today student 2 and I continued our focus on multiplication word problems. We practiced strategies for identifying components of word problems, and applying numbers from problems to real math.

ISEE Tutoring review by Crystal in Los Angeles, CA
We worked on test prep questions and using the strategies we have covered to solve them/ find the correct answer. We did mostly math questions and had mini lessons based on challenges, including conversions from fractions to percents to decimals as well as finding rules based on input/output charts. I left the student with an essay to write between sessions that we will go over next session.

ISEE Tutoring review by Lily in Los Angeles, CA
This was our first session post-assessment test. The student seemed comfortable and is learning to work through her discomfort/anxiety. We started discussing the next assessment test (which she's taking next month). We went over general information and strategies, and then started by working on the verbal section. We went over synonyms and sentence completion, which she handled beautifully, and took a few short breaks in between.

ISEE Tutoring review by Layla in Los Angeles, CA
During today's session we worked on math topics such as prime factorization, greatest common factor and least common multiple. We discussed the difference between prime factorization and factors, and utilized two strategies to find the GCF. We also corrected misconceptions about least common multiples that the student had. In doing so, we discussed the differences between multiples and factors. Towards the end of the session, we moved into fractions. We used both factors and multiples to find equivalent fractions, through part/whole charts. Finally, we discussed the fraction bar as a division sign, and used division to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers.

ISEE Tutoring review by Miranda in Los Angeles, CA
Reviewed synonyms first. The math went better; I think I'm understanding the student's level of math skill better so I can explain things at her level.
