How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The PSAT, or pre-SAT, gives students a glance at what the SAT exam may look like. The exam measures what a student has learned in high school and what they need to do to succeed in college. The way to a good test score isn't through memorizing long lists of vocabulary; it requires a thorough understanding of the concepts you've been learning throughout your high school education. The areas you will be tested on include evidence-based reading and writing and math. If you've struggled in the past with either of these components, then working with a private tutor may be beneficial. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can help you discover a PSAT tutor in Los Angeles, California.

There are multiple types of PSAT. The PSAT/NMSQT can be used for acquiring the National Merit Scholarship, and the PSAT 10 covers the same material, but it is taken earlier and cannot be used for the scholarship. The third version is the PSAT 8/9, which covers different material and is used mostly as a progress baseline for students. No matter what version of the test you are preparing for, the PSAT can evaluate your true understanding of important concepts. If you're uncertain of how to begin studying, a PSAT tutor in Los Angeles can help you create a study plan to assist you in your preparation. Your tutor may begin by giving you an assessment that tests you on the concepts that are tested on the PSAT to determine your current skill level. Then, your tutor can create a custom-tailored study plan that focuses on improving your weaknesses.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Los Angeles, CA
In our session today we focused primarily on the math section, but brought in a little reading toward the end. The student has much less confidence in the math section than the reading. She has been doing better working through the problems to the best of her ability, rather than thinking she needs to do the complex mathematics sometimes demonstrated by the book. She continues to excel in the reading section, rarely missing any questions and doing an excellent job of approaching difficult problems.

PSAT Tutoring review by Nick in Los Angeles, CA
We began with a vocabulary review and then did a practice set of improving sentences. I think this is the student's single weakest section (got 10/15 right on this set), so we will continue to drill it. We then spent the rest of the time reviewing math subjects, with the goal of concluding math with two more sessions.

PSAT Tutoring review by Molly in Los Angeles, CA
The student and I started this session by going over some more word roots. This is going to be very important to him on the test, as the PSAT requires him to know some fairly advanced vocab and his time to study is limited. After that, I timed him taking a sampling of several different sections. He's a little worried about running out of time on the test, and we talked about some strategies (skipping questions that you can't narrow down, reading the questions first for the critical reading section, memorizing certain math formulas, etc.). The student says he studies well with flash cards, so I'll be putting together a couple of sets for him to review both vocab and math formulas.

PSAT Tutoring review by Chelsea in Los Angeles, CA
We went over the questions that the student missed on the Critical Reading sections of his practice test. We talked about strategies for this section, the main one of which is to read every answer choice very carefully. I also quizzed him on various vocabulary words that show up frequently on the PSAT/SAT. I asked that he complete the first three sections (one each of Math, Writing, and Critical Reading) of Practice Test #9 in his SAT Study Guide, and I asked that he time himself on all three (25 minutes each). We will go over his results on Wednesday.

PSAT Tutoring review by Esther in Los Angeles, CA
We went over the math homework I assigned last session -- a worksheet on percents and ratios. The student was mixing up his proportions at first but got the hang of it toward the end. We then went over high-frequency words from previous sessions. I assigned another portion of the list and an algebra worksheet for homework.

PSAT Tutoring review by Tim in Los Angeles, CA
Reviewed test taking strategies and provided an overview for the test as a whole. Provided assistance with both critical reading and math sections. The student is already strong in the critical reading so we moved through that quickly. During the session, I showed her several key facts and math equations and she was applying them well by the end of the session.
