What is your teaching philosophy?
To create a friendly and enjoyable environment to share my knowledge, and create an open dialogue with my students.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During a first session, I would spend time getting to know the student as a person, as well as having him or her get to know me. It is important that there is a good vibe between my students and me before the learning process even begins.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By helping boost his or her confidence and organization skills within the subjects we are working on.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would create a friendly and fun environment by showing genuine interest in the student's hobbies, likes, and dislikes. It is important to be able to have conversations and brief asides during the tutoring session so a student has a chance to relax and feel more comfortable.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try my best to explain the concept in a way that the student can relate to.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By having an open dialogue based upon what they are understanding versus what they are not.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Creating a friendly atmosphere in which a student is comfortable expressing his or her own opinion, and does not feel like he or she is being lectured to.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By showing them my enthusiasm for the subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask questions and I would encourage the students to ask questions of me.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By praising the areas that they are strong in, while non-judgmentally critiquing and working with them on their weaker skill sets.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Writing tools and literature, as well as the Internet for access to a dictionary and thesaurus.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I will track their progress throughout the tutoring sessions and keep an open dialogue with the parents.
