I joined TFA-New York City and was assigned as a 5th Grade Special Education teacher at P.S. 325 in Harlem in 2011. I was rated an effective teacher both years. It was at P.S. 325 where I learned to use various technologies such as PowerPoint, iPad apps, an interactive SmartBoard and enthusiasm to connect with my students while teaching Math. At one point, TFA asked me to give a seminar to other Corps Members that taught them how to make their presentations more interactive and engaging. I learned how to manage multiple projects and people, while continuing to develop professionally. I engaged with the community, located just blocks from Columbia University, and began to understand the fragmentation of New York City.
