Tutoring review by Lyndsy in Evanston, IL
The student has a Chapter 5: Section 2 test in science tomorrow over the elements and the periodic table. The first thing the student and I defined and discussed was what a property was. He had difficulty grasping the concept of "property" until I substituted "characteristics" and "traits". Next, the student began to outline in a non-uniform way, so we read together a sub-section and I outlined so he could have an example. Next, the student read and then outlined following my model. We clarified the difference between "radioactive" and "reactive" as he was using the words interchangeably. He defined and gave examples of an element and a compound as well since he was unclear on their meanings. I advised the student to continue reading and outlining Section 2.

Tutoring review by Vincent in Evanston, IL
Today, the student and I looked over a review for her upcoming quiz in exponential and logarithmic functions. She had completed the majority of the review on her own, and was very comfortable with using information from vertex-form exponential and logarithmic functions to graphically represent them, but was unsure of how to determine the inverse. I showed her a few examples, emphasizing the order of operations necessary to find the inverse of exponential and logarithmic functions, as well as pointing out that every term in the function is either inverted or opposed. After she worked some practice functions, she was able to consistently find the inverse. I left her with a paper showing the steps of finding the inverse, as well as labelled vertex form exponential and logarithmic functions as reference.

Today the student completed his math packet and English homework. For the remaining 30 minutes, he reviewed for his science test, which he will take on Monday. I left him with several math problems involving adding and subtracting fractions. The student and I will begin reviewing for his final math test this coming week.

The student is now showing consistent mastery of turning improper fractions into mixed numbers as well as a clearer (and almost consistent) mastery of subtracting mixed numbers, finding factors, and multiples. We reviewed the differences between real, irrational, rational, integers, natural, and whole numbers. He will be receiving some extra homework from me.

After introductions, we began mapping out our expectations for working together toward the student's goals of finishing her Common Application Essay for multiple schools and specific school-focused Supplemental Essays. She will be completing additional research into the schools and programs she is applying to so that she will have more specific resources to complete her applications and feel confident while doing so. We've outlined a basic template for her to follow to begin writing her supplemental essays.

Tutoring review by Ramon in Evanston, IL
The student and I talked about how to tell the even/oddness of functions, how to find roots of polynomials using synthetic division, and what direction quantics point at the ends. He definitely understands the material; he just needed some clearing up of certain topics.
