Hi, I am Cassie Bishop, and for seven years, I have been dedicated to helping students of different age groups (from middle school to college) in mostly math and science. As someone driven to become a professor, I love to teach and have a great passion for sharing my knowledge with others! I am most passionate about math and hard sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and physics and have most experience tutoring middle school, high school, and college students. My mission is to develop students' problem-solving skills so that they can get to the answers on their own to not only improve their homework scores but also help on quizzes and tests through better knowledge of the material. I hope to be able to help you with all of your tutoring needs and to promote student success!

I am a neuroscience PhD graduate student at Northwestern university. I obtained my B.A. degree from Bryn Mawr College in Biology and Computer Science. I have a passion for education and firmly believe that education can change lives and provide the upward social mobility. I love interacting with students and building connections with them on a personal level. I prefer to teach students the learning method and thinking process, rather than just the answer. I am good at guiding students and letting them come up with the answer by themselves. In college, I am a TA for a Calculus 1 class, helping students understand difficult concepts and prepare for tests. Last summer, I traveled back to China and tutored math for standardized testing such as the SAT Subject Math and AP Calculus. Helping struggling students achieve high scores in standardized testing has been one of the most rewarding experiences - it boosts students' confidence and at the same time gives them the desire to learn more and tackle harder problems.Chinese is my native language. As a Chinese tutor, I enjoy helping students not only achieve desirable scores in standardized testing, but also use the language to communicate. I believe the key to learning a new language is to practice, practice, and practice. I love seeing my students gain confidence in speaking this beautiful language.

As an educator and youth development specialist, I excel at working with my students to achieve their goals. With years of full-time classroom teaching experience and numerous roles as a tutor, I know that I can help my students master the SAT, GMAT, and other subjects. At Middlebury College, I pursued a Political Science major and Economics minor, focusing on international development. During my undergraduate years, I also worked in Harlem tutoring students in math, literacy, the SAT, and essay writing. After earning my B.A., I moved to California to teach at an inner-city charter school. There I worked directly with under-performing students in one-on-one and small group settings. I honed my ability to explain even the most challenging material in simple terms and to motivate the most disheartened students to try again. In September 2012, I began my work in Rwanda with the United States Peace Corps. The only Westerner living in Kinazi sector, I integrated myself into community life and tried to build a better understanding of the priorities, goals, and daily challenges of the rural poor in Rwanda. I taught high school English but, working in a village school, I had few resources. I developed my own curriculum based on the skills I saw my students needed most and created teaching material that made lessons dynamic and fun. The level of need I saw in my neighbors, students and colleagues motivated me to go beyond my primary teaching assignment and explore a more sustainable approach to economic development. I identified the potential of business to create long-term solutions to the hardships I saw in my village and started a social enterprise designed to make both a profit and a positive impact on the community. Because of my experience in Rwanda, I will be pursuing an MBA in the near future. Not only do I have a background in education and excellent test scores, but I am also a strong believer in the ability of my students to see radical improvements in their test performances. I am passionate about teaching and approach my work with patience and creativity. I am determined to see my students reach their full potential!

American Literature Tutor • +41 Subjects

I have a B.A. in English Language and Literature, and in Cinema and Media Studies from The University of Chicago, and an M.A. in Film Studies from The University of Iowa, where I also spent two years as a T.A., teaching undergraduate courses in film studies and related fields. I firmly believe that self-confidence, far more than ambition or natural aptitude, is the greatest determinant of success in an academic setting. By "confidence" I mean not only confidence in ones mastery of topical material, but, more fundamentally, confidence in ones ability to learn and think independently. As an instructor, I am dedicated to helping students succeed because I know from my own experiences as a student that, at every level of education, from elementary to graduate school, the support and encouragement of a passionate teacher can turn a diffident or apathetic underachieving student into a classroom star.My favorite subject to tutor is standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.) because such tests cover a finite body of material that can be taught and mastered. In addition to test prep, I also tutor a number of English related subjects (including Writing, Literature, Essay Editing, and Grammar), and offer help with Study Skills and Organization. In my free time, I enjoy reading, music, travel, and photography.

I earned my bachelor's degree in Political Science with the minor in Philosophy from Arizona State University and my Master of Arts in Global History from American Military University. My professional experience includes serving as a commissioned Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy and teaching English as a foreign language both at home and abroad. I recently moved to the Las Vegas metro area where I am starting a post-baccalaureate degree in secondary education to teach social sciences. I have traveled extensively for academic, professional, and personal purposes, visiting over 40 countries and living in a dozen different places. I have advanced proficiency in Spanish and basic skills in several other foreign languages.I have tutored 1 on 1 in Spanish and taught English as a foreign language both in the classroom and in private lessons. While involved with a PhD program in International Politics, I worked as a Teaching Associate and mentored students, graded essays and exams, and help run in-person and online courses. I have a deep-seated passion for learning which I try to impart to my students. I believe that the ideal tutor must possess subject-mastery, yet also be lively, enthusiastic, and engaging. The best teachers I have had were the ones who were able to break down complex subject-matter into easy to understand terms, concepts, and rules. I try to carry on this legacy in tutoring, encouraging interest in the material while driving students to progress. I know what it takes to thrive in the academic world and am happy to share my keys to success! When I'm not sitting around with my nose in a book I enjoy traveling and exploring new places. I love running, hiking, checking out new movies, good food, all things sci-fi, spirituality, joking around with friends, and trying new things! I'm also a huge fan of concerts and heavy and electronic music.

Conversational French Tutor • +33 Subjects

I believe that the main goal of teaching is to promote learning while simultaneously creating a comfortable, yet stimulating and motivating environment that encourages the students to discuss new ideas and concepts. In addition to creating a stimulating and comfortable learning environment, I also understand that students benefit most from dynamic teaching methods and techniques. I will accommodate to the students using different teaching styles and methods that range from lecture based lessons, interactive discussions and kinesthetic approaches to learning. I believe that it is important to have a structured learning routine, but at the same time, it is imperative to try a variety of approaches to the material, as a way to reach out to as many students as possible. My goal as an instructor is to emphasize diverse approaches to learning, while simultaneously working with students individually to meet their personal and academic goals. Moreover, my teaching philosophy focuses on a collaborative learning approach. I implement a classroom and learning environment based on student input and open collaboration that contributes to the curriculum and grading criteria of the class. In the classes that I taught at the University of Florida, I used group activities where the students not only discussed classroom topics such as homework and basic grammar concepts in French, but I also emphasize the discussion of current events in the United States and France, but also globally. I prefer to use activities that force the students to think critically about the world outside of the classroom and the textbook, while simultaneously using their language skills to communicate their beliefs and ideas. In extension to my teaching philosophy, I also believe that it is important to continue to learn, grow and constantly develop and strive for more as a teacher. I believe that the students model their teacher's learning habits and behaviors and as a result, I strive to communicate my passion and interest in the French language and culture. If the instructor does not show an interest or passion for the material and for learning, the students will be less likely to be motivated to learn and succeed. Additionally, I also make sure that I am updated and knowledgeable of the current formal learning and teaching theories, so that I am able to teach the best classes possible.

I am currently a rising sophomore at Columbia University interested in studying Economics and Psychology. As the oldest sibling (I have a younger brother and sister), I have become the default family "homework helper" over the years. This experience has taught me how to reach younger students in an effective way, be it through fun learning games or real-life examples. Having recently taken both the ACT and SAT multiple times, I am familiar with both exams and know what it takes to do well on them. I am also familiar with the college application process, as I was going through it myself a two years ago. Many rounds of editing my own essays has taught me how to effectively structure both the essays and supplements. I love helping students learn and reinforce concepts they didn't previously understand. I am patient, enthusiastic, and creative--all traits I believe are very important when it comes to being a strong tutor!

I am currently a graduate student and teaching assistant in the History department at California State University, Northridge. I also earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in History at CSUN. I work on campus in the Michael Patterson History Writing Center as a writing tutor for students enrolled in history courses. With its personalized approach, one-on-one tutoring is an exceptionally powerful tool for any student looking to improve their grades, their confidence, and their educational experience. I greatly enjoy watching my students improve their logical thinking processes, become clearer written communicators and, of course, see higher grades! I believe that writing is a skill similar to any other: with practice, dedication, and a little help, anyone can become a clear, effective writer. In addition to my experience with one-on-one tutoring, I have also taught reading, public speaking, and study skills classes to students as young as Kindergarten all the way up to graduate students. Reading, study habits, public speaking, and organization are all skills that, like writing, can be honed with guidance and practice. I truly believe that cultivating these skills leads not only to improved academic performance but to improved confidence and self-esteem in all areas of life.In my spare time, I enjoy reading, exercising, playing with cats, and learning everything I can about the world.
