Hello! My name is Mrs. Maxwell, and I have been teaching for over ten years in many different fields: homeschooling, public schools, after-school programs, and tutoring services. I have taught a broad range of subjects but am most passionate about anything involving the written word like English skills, reading, literature, and writing.
I am a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing. During my college career, I organized and conducted writing groups with peers to read, discuss, and critique one another's work.
Since graduation in 2016, I have worked as an Educational Assistant at an elementary Knox County School, working with students in enrichment (above level) and intervention (below level) groups in reading and math. In these groups, I work on many skills such as reading fluency and comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, reading strategies, math skills, and researching. Many of my students meet or exceed their goals and exit the intervention program.
I teach Creative Writing in an after-school program where I foster curiosity while focusing on skills such as grammar, punctuation, and story elements. My goal in this program is to get children excited about reading, writing, and accessing their imaginations.
At home, I homeschool my two high school-aged children in the core subjects of English/Language Arts, History, and Science as well as their chosen electives. My two older children have graduated: one is working in his chosen career path and the other is in college pursuing his. I have homeschooled primary, intermediate, and secondary grade levels.
In my experience of working with students from diverse backgrounds, and even my own children, I have learned that we all have an innate love of learning. It is just a matter of making learning personal and fun and uncovering the desire to learn.
