As an educator, to two most important skills to develop in any learner are critical thinking and writing skills, as these are necessary in any field of endeavor.
That is, with a focus on developing the writing and critical thinking abilities of my pupils as a first priority, I aim to provide them with the tools to become effective learners irrespective of their chosen fields of specialization or professional callings.
My training in interdisciplinary cultural history has also greatly influenced my teaching style. Depending upon the subject, I aim to incorporate both primary and secondary sources in an up-to-date multi-media approach to instruction.
In that vein, I endeavor to bring a range of methodologies to the classroom in an effort to account for the diversity of my students' learning styles. Since an integrative approach demands both comfort with and flexibility within a range of teaching methods on the part of the instructor, I am professionally committed to reviewing, revising, and improving my teaching strategies over the course of my career.
On a personal level, I always try to allow my own excitement about and dedication to the material to come across. I have found that, regardless of my own preferred learning style, my students have been more apt to become engaged with the material when I actively pursue two principles: the first is a commitment to maintaining a critical environment in which they can encounter the subject matter freely, inquisitively, and creatively; the second is to convey my own energy and enthusiasm for the ideas and the material.
