My name is Katie and I'm a recent graduate of Belmont University. I majored in songwriting so I've spent the last four years studying music theory and music publishing, all while churning out songs like nobody's business. I've also written two screenplays and started to dabble in short stories and fiction. So, yes, I am that annoying person with a laptop, hogging a table at your local coffee shop. Basically, I just love stringing words together, regardless of the format.
My other great love also happens to be my minor: education. Through my classes at Belmont, not only was I able to study child development, classroom management, lesson planning, and how to meet the needs of diverse learners, but also I had the opportunity to observe and assist in countless schools all over Nashville. Through the years, I've worked with a widely diverse group of students (ages K-12, students with exceptionalities, English Language Learners), all of whom had their own unique set of gifts, struggles, goals, and learning styles. This experience reinforced my belief that EVERY student can learn if they have the right support. And I find it incredibly fulfilling to be that support.
As for my tutoring experience, I tutored underclassman my junior and senior year of high school. Mainly, I worked with students who were struggling in English or who needed help developing and editing their papers. More recently, I tutored at Salama Urban Ministries, an after school program for elementary school students with a focus on improving math, reading, and critical thinking skills. I also have an eleven year old little brother, so I've spent the past decade reading with him and helping him with his homework. I like to think I'm tutoring him, whether he knows it or not.
Overall, I'm passionate about students. I'm passionate about writing. And I'm passionate about showing kids that writing doesn't have to be as scary or difficult as it may seem.
