What is your teaching philosophy?
I take a fun, interactive, Socratic approach to teaching students of all ages that stresses interaction and creativity. I look forward to collaborating with you!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student's interests, what they're struggling with, and what subjects they excel at currently.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
With practice!
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Compliment them, and assist them as little as I can.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Break it down and go through it with them, step by step, asking them if they have trouble understanding what we're doing along the way.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
With repetition and going over work.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listening, discussion, and making time for short breaks if we need them.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Discuss it with them and see how they'd like to approach it.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Quizzes, outlines, and notecards.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Compliment them as much as I can, and give them as little help as possible.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
With observation, asking questions, and listening.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I see what isn't working and tailor my approach to how they react, plus ask them what they think always helps.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Notes, outlines, graphs, a calculator, and books.
