What is your teaching philosophy?
Every learner has unique needs. A teacher's job is to understand the student's needs in order to make learning enjoyable.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first time we meet, we'll spend some time getting to know each other. From there, we'll talk about what your goals are and decide where we need to start.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will do my best to help you understand the material and give you the knowledge and tools you need in order to become self-aware.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
There are a million ways to approach any concept. If you're having a difficult time with the way I am explaining something, we will need to use a different approach. Perhaps something more visual or more kinesthetic would be helpful.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading can be broken down into several different components. I would first determine what part of the reading passage you are having troubles with. We would revisit vocabulary, and then talk about any complex grammatical struggles that may increase the difficulty of the passage.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
A skilled tutor would find a way to relate the subject to something the student is interested in.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Comprehension questions of increasing difficulty are a great way to casually check in with the student. I know the student fully understands when they can explain it in their own words or demonstrate the skill without assistance.
