What is your teaching philosophy?
When you learn the language, mistakes are never the concern. Practice will make it better.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
1. Get to know the student and expectations. 2. Determine the student's knowledge. 3. Collaborate with the student on a plan of action.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
1. Provide students with opportunities to self-monitor. 2. Provide written and/or oral feedback on classwork and homework. 3. Encourage students to set their own learning goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
To help the students to accept that there is more than one answer, enhance learning by planning lectures to increase their understanding. Encourage students to read with more meaning. Finally, help students to become self directed learners.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
1. Read Zhuyin or Pinyin. Print a copy on the first day of class, and read through it twice. At the same time, highlight, and then record the due dates for assignments and threaded discussions in the calendar. 2. Plan weekly study times. Planning a regular study time, blocking off set times each week, is what successful online students do most often.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
1. Ask students to reflect. 2. Ask students to summarize. 3. Practice frequency. 4. Assessment.
