I learned to love learning in kindergarten when I colored the alphabet in bold, new colors. I want to share the love of learning because I understand the struggles of homework and tests can be overwhelming. It shouldn't be. I believe that Learning and Play can be one and the same.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Central Michigan University. I also have a minor in Marketing. I performed special research in Children's Literature, particularly picturebooks and the way children read. From my studies in the Humanities, I have learned to be sympathetic to the way people feel, and from Marketing the way people think.
Learning has always been an adventure for me, one that literally took me across the world. I studied abroad in England as well as taught classes in Mexico and Cuba.

In addition to my studies, I sought professional development. I worked in a greenhouse for five years, and from this stemmed my love for nature. I spent seven years directing and managing at a cinema, hence my newfound love for film and cinematic technology. Currently, I supervise at a bank, and my appreciation for finance is blossoming.

Work and school were memorable for their own experiences, but I have also always had a passion for volunteering. I tutored middle schoolers while I was in high school as well as held free dance classes for students. Later, I joined Big Brothers Big Sisters to mentor a student for a year. In college, I became an executive member of Zeta Theta Pi, a group for organized volunteerism.

Work, study, and service have shaped who I am and the things I love. While my passion has always been English and literature. I've discovered plenty from my experiences in academics and professionalism. I hope this is an idea I can share with each of my students.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teachers and tutors alike need to tune into what engages the student. Lessons can be modified to suit the student's learning style. Always encourage the student to lead you in his/her studies, and soon enough they'll be teaching you a thing or two.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introductions and "icebreakers" are best for a tutor and student to be comfortable with each other, and to find mutual ground to build a relationship.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Ask open-ended questions. They gauge what the student knows by letting him/her speak freely. They might even be surprised by the things they understand. The key is to let the student do most of the talking. This will boost the confidence in the student, which ultimately leads to greater independence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Having some kind of reward in place generally helps motivate the student. Rewards vary for each student. It could be play, rest, or even attaining a certain grade or score.
