What is your teaching philosophy?
Teachers and tutors alike need to tune into what engages the student. Lessons can be modified to suit the student's learning style. Always encourage the student to lead you in his/her studies, and soon enough they'll be teaching you a thing or two.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introductions and "icebreakers" are best for a tutor and student to be comfortable with each other, and to find mutual ground to build a relationship.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Ask open-ended questions. They gauge what the student knows by letting him/her speak freely. They might even be surprised by the things they understand. The key is to let the student do most of the talking. This will boost the confidence in the student, which ultimately leads to greater independence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Having some kind of reward in place generally helps motivate the student. Rewards vary for each student. It could be play, rest, or even attaining a certain grade or score.
