Over the past 10 years, I have obtained an AA degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, a BA in Liberal Studies, a minor in History, and a Masters in Reading and Literacy from Walden University. In addition to my degrees, I became certified to teach K-6 in all subjects, Mathematics and Sciences 4th-9th, and History 9th-12th. For the last five years, I have taught in a variety of grades as well as schools from 1st grade all the way up to 8th grade Mathematics. During this time, I worked with large group of students as well as individuals before and after school to help them understand and grasps concepts being taught in class. Furthermore, I tutored privately as well, which allowed me the opportunity to work with children I would not have normally worked with.
Since I have a vast amount of experience and a good foundational knowledge of subjects up to 8th grade, I feel comfortable tutoring in all subjects with the main focuses being on Mathematics, Geography, Science, and Reading/writing. I know where students should be coming from and where they should be going towards. Out of all the subjects I know and have experience with, I really enjoy tutoring students in math because I have a variety of different techniques I can use to help students learn and retain material. Furthermore, I like to demonstrate to students how math is connected to our every day lives, which in turns makes it one of the most important subjects to learn in school.
My teaching/tutoring style is more like a conversation where I like the student to be as involved in the learning process as I am in the teaching process. I enjoy students feeling comfortable asking questions and making comments throughout the sessions as well as know that making mistakes is part of the learning process. In the end, the most important part of these sessions is not only for the student to learn and enhance his/her understanding of the subject matter, but also learn that I am here to help them use these skills to be successful in the work force.
