As a writing tutor, I like to focus on helping students find their authentic voice. Essays succeed when students strip away the extraneous material and present themselves and their ideas honestly, and I think with a little coaching any student can be a successful writer.

How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?
If you would like your child to attend a private high school, they may like need to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT). This exam takes about two and a half hours to complete and consists of 300 questions. It is required by numerous parochial and private schools, and it is taken by students in eighth grade. The traditional HSPT has five sections, including language, math, quantitative skills, reading, and verbal skills. The language section focuses on capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. The math and quantitative skills sections are somewhat similar in style, but they are different in terms of the material covered. The math section covers material in geometry, algebra, arithmetic, and problem solving. Meanwhile, the quantitative skills section includes arithmetical numbers, geometric numbers, geometric and non-geometric comparisons, and number series. The reading sections look at your abilities in reading comprehension and vocabulary. Finally, the verbal skills section places an emphasis on verbal classification, logic, analogies, antonyms, and synonyms. There are also several optional sections, including Catholic religion, mechanical aptitude, and science.
With so many diverse sections to prepare for, it may be challenging to feel confident going into exam day. If your child seems stressed over the exam and you are not sure if they may be able to perform at their best without assistance, it may be time to connect them with a private tutor. Varsity Tutors may locate a HSPT tutor in Milwaukee, WI, who may use the most up-to-date resources to try to help your child excels on the HSPT.
