What is your teaching philosophy?
Teach for subject matter mastery; don't settle for getting past the next exam.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student and understand challenges, strengths, and weaknesses, then assess where to start and jump right in.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Give them a problem that they have the tools to solve but have not directly solved.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Keep the subject relevant to their life, and ambitions.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Determine prerequisite skills that may be missing. There is no shame in taking a step back and a reviewing what was covered in a previous course.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
1. Accuracy before speed. 2. Go over context. 3. Have the student discuss who, what, when, where, why, and how.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Determine what they need to review from previous coursework.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Show them how the can apply it to their life now.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Have the student solve a similar problem, and then teach the material back to me.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Show them that they can teach the material.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Ask them to solve problems and explain their reasoning.
