We continued taking notes and completing worksheets on the Civil War for history. The student scored an 80% on his last English quiz on the Great Gatsby. He is reading ch 6 & 7 for Monday. We reviewed pronunciation for his current Spanish vocabulary, and reviewed conjugation. He needs to complete 75 online questions for tomorrow. He decided to do these alone after our review of the terms. He is creating flashcards for our Thursday session. We will begin review for his history exam a week from Thursday. He is getting better at organization, note taking, and keeping on top of his daily work.

The student had a social studies assignment on governments of Asia. She struggled to understand how embargoes were the only peaceful option for addressing human right violations in foreign countries. We discussed the Cuban embargo as an example of this. We also covered the types of governments in Asia, ranging from totalitarian to democracies. She was very curious about how the totalitarian regime in North Korea and the communist government of China worked for everyday life and in cases of criminal action. I contrasted recent event from the US with how those situations might be handled in North Korea or China.

Tonight the student shared about her current study habits and needs. We went over organization tips for her homework and how to plan out studying for exams. We worked on her biology homework and I left her with the task of using an agenda or pocket calendar for her school assignments.

When I got to the house, the student made a list of what she had to accomplish this evening. We first reviewed French homework and then I quizzed her on vocabulary words for Science. She completed another Science assignment, which involved annotating a passage on the Earth's layers and answering questions on the passage. Throughout the session, I made some suggestions on organizing paperwork to complete homework.

We started with an executive skills questionnaire to open a discussion about areas they need improvement in. We then moved on to test taking tips and strategies. I had them take a quick quiz that focused on reading the question. We then went on to reading comprehension strategies. The students compared their reading notes from a section in their biology book. We discussed note taking tips for in class. They showed me a few of their PowerPoints.
This session went very well. We narrowed down what the students wanted to improve on. We discussed what they want out of these sessions. And we have a loose outline for future meetings. I'm very excited to work with these students.

The student and I talked about being present while reading and how that is vital for comprehension of nonfiction texts. We made a study schedule for his pending course load next semester. We talked about his assignments and made a plan for his next reading assignments. We are planning to meet next on Wednesday.
