Varsity Tutors is the only name you need to know if you're interested in taking a live online MTC exam class. The MTC, or Missouri Teacher Certification, is a credential that all teaching candidates interested in working within the state of Missouri must earn. Enrolling in formal MTC exam training can be a great way to study for the test (or tests) you need to pass as you work toward this valuable credential. Please keep reading to learn more about how we could help you prepare for the MTC exam.
What is an MTC certification?
MTC certification is a prerequisite to working as a professional teacher in the state of Missouri. In order to earn it, you must first obtain a relevant bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university. After that, you can start taking the MTC exams in order to prove your readiness to lead a classroom. All MTC exams are administered electronically in secure testing sites.
The specific exams you need to take depend on your chosen specialization. All candidates must pass the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA): a generic exam comprised of four distinct subtests: Reading Comprehension (39 multiple-choice items in 75 minutes), Mathematics (40 multiple-choice items in 75 minutes), Science/Social Studies (40 multiple-choice questions in one hour), and Writing (one essay prompt in 60 minutes). Each section is graded separately, and you must pass each subtest individually in order to pass the exam as a whole. The MoGEA costs $25 per subtest or $59 for all four at once.
In addition, you may need to pass one or more Missouri Content Assessments based on your chosen field. For instance, a prospective secondary biology teacher would need to pass 016 Biology in addition to the MoGEA in order to earn the appropriate MTC certification. Each of these tests has a unique format and pricing structure. For example, the Secondary Education – English examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions over a two-hour testing session and costs $73 plus fees per attempt.
What is the best way to study for the MTC exam?
Considering the probability that you're preparing for more than one exam, your test prep could feel overwhelming. If you feel like you need professional assistance prioritizing what to look over and when, an MTC exam refresher course could be the right option for you. Of course, you need to make sure that any course you're considering actually entails live instruction.
Contrary to what you may believe, many companies market recordings and video clips as an MTC exam class even though they cannot answer student questions or adapt their curriculum to the needs of the group. Thankfully, all of the classes we provide entail 100 percent live instruction. If you and your classmates already understand fundamental English grammar or the basics of chemistry, your live instructor can concentrate on other things to improve your study efficacy. Your instructor can also address any questions you have as they arise, allowing you to seek clarification before a simple misunderstanding has an opportunity to snowball out of control.
If you get stuck on a particularly challenging concept, your instructor can try alternative ways of explaining it to you until it finally clicks. You might go over memorization tricks to help you remember historical facts, or listen to an entertaining story to make a topic more interesting. You can also ask your instructor to recommend trustworthy independent study materials or even meet you one-on-one outside of your usual MTC exam course to provide individualized support. Only live instruction has the capability to treat you like the individual you are.
You can also ask your classmates for help if you feel stumped. Somebody in your class may have more practical experience than you do, allowing you to learn from their mistakes. Hearing something explained from a different perspective could be all it takes for a concept to click. You can also try explaining something to somebody else to reinforce your own understanding of the material. Your MTC exam class represents a collaborative learning environment where everybody is pushing toward their academic goals together, so why not make the most of it?
While the focus of your MTC prep class is likely to be academic content, your instructor can also share test-taking strategies to help you feel more confident on exam day. For example, some MTC exams include reference materials such as an on-screen calculator or a Periodic Table of Elements. Your instructor can teach you how to make the most of these resources without wasting too much time consulting them. You can also review how to eliminate some of the incorrect answer choices if you feel stumped by a multiple-choice question to make your guesses more effective. If your exam includes a free-response question, your instructor can show you how to work from an outline to streamline your creative process. Creating a quick outline can help you write more quickly as well.
Your instructor can also administer practice exams during your MTC prep course to help you develop a familiarity with the formatting and content you can expect on test day. If you are uncomfortable with electronic testing, practicing with the exam's interface could help alleviate any test anxiety you are experiencing. Taking practice tests can also help you budget the time available to you on the actual exam. You can even review your answers with your instructor to better understand where your unique areas of opportunity lie. When it comes to standardized testing, there is no such thing as feeling too prepared.
