My teaching philosophy is based on my several years of teaching experience at different levels including middle school, high school, and college.
I believe that no student is incapable of learning. However, every student learns differently. While some students grasp all the concepts being taught right there in the classroom, other students would need to spend some more time on some of them to be able to fully understand them. Also, while some students can do independent self-study, others need a lot of guidance to be successful. My goal is to help each student be successful, no matter what their learning style. This can only be achieved through regular class attendance by the student to connect with the lecturer and fellow students. I believe students do not only learn from me but also learn from other students. I encourage students to attend all classes. I also avail myself to them so students can reach out to me for any help they may need.
In the classroom, I use a combination of lecture notes, models, real-life examples, and class exercises to teach. I encourage students to ask questions by pausing several times and sharing that no question is a dumb one. From experience, every question a student asks represents questions other students have. I take time to make sure each question is fully answered by getting feedback from the student that asked the question. I also give students homework problems to help reinforce concepts covered in class. Students' performance on the homework problems gives me a clue on areas I may need to work on some more with my students.
I have met many students who hold the idea that Chemistry, Mathematics, or some other subject is too difficult for them, based on some prior experience or other students' views. While I acknowledge that every subject is difficult if you have not been taught it, I also share the view that every student can excel in it, if they set their mind to it. I aim to help students to see how easy concepts are by breaking them down into small, manageable pieces and showing how they relate or apply to real life.
As a student, I struggled with classes that I hated or feared the teachers. I make my classes fun with real-life applications and stories, so students look forward to the next class. These examples and stories also help students remember concepts covered in class.
I believe that I am a successful teacher if and only if my students are successful in the subject I teach.
