Help students learn the skill of how to learn a new language, rather than just following all the way.

Encourage the student and let him/her know his/her progress, even it's only a little.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

On the first session, I will have a brief introduction about the Chinese language and my teaching style. Let the student know that Chinese is a kind of conquerable language-- easy to learn with my help. Build confidence in learning Chinese. Then, we will learn a practical conversation; the student can pick whatever he/she want to learn.
