Get to know them! I'm a firm believer that people learn better when they can connect with their tutor.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by focusing on the end goal. For adults; it may be getting into a graduate program. For high school students; it's getting into college. For elementary school students; it is learning to read, or being able to go play!
