Hello! Here is some background information about me to let you get to know me better: I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) K-12 at Teachers College, Columbia University. I am a member of the TR@TC2 (Teaching Residents at Teachers College) cohort, a federally-funded program designed to recruit and prepare secondary-level teachers to teach in high-need New York City schools. I specifically chose the TR@TC2 program for its focus on inclusive education and on critical, social justice-oriented pedagogy. For the past academic year, I have taught in elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms, providing students with differentiated ENL (English as a New Language) instruction. Previous to pursuing certification in TESOL, I worked in publishing, earned a MA in English with a Writing Concentration at Fordham University, worked as a bilingual literacy tutor in Austin, TX for grades K-2, worked as a senior page in a library, and earned a BA in English and Creative Writing at Canisius College. As you can see, I have been a lifelong lover of language, which has been reflected in both my personal and professional life.
As a teacher and tutor, I aim to meet students where they are and to provide individualized instruction with an eye toward their academic goals. I believe that a good teacher must be responsive and reflective. As part of my practice, I like to provide my professional expertise, while also remaining open to suggestions from the learner about how he or she best learns. For this reason--and because I take a capacity-approach to learners--I like to have check-in conversations with students about how they think they are progressing and what strategies seem to be working best for them. I enjoy the art and science of teaching and strive to provide a research-based, creative curriculum to best ensure student engagement and success.
I look forward to meeting and working with future students!
