What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe patience, motivation, and a great sense of humor makes a great teacher. It creates confidence in a student to ask questions and learn more.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
A typical first session would be to introduce oneself and talk about hobbies, and to find similarities between tutor and student in order to break the ice and create a bond. It leaves less room for shyness and more room for questions and answers.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can suggest many movies, books, music, and places to visit if they want to explore more than what I have to offer in our tutoring sessions. I will always be available to answer questions they may have on something they heard and want clarification on.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Praising goes a long way! Everyone learns at a different pace. So any improvement made is always a reason to stay motivated and keep going!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
There are all kinds of learning strategies. Some students may be visual learners, auditory learners, or hands on. Depending on the student's needs, I can offer to teach by the book, by repeating phrases and watches movies, shows or reading articles, as well as creating dialogues where we can practice the student's area of difficulty.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Practice makes perfect. I believe the more you practice, the better you will get at it. I will be available for tips and ready to answer any question they may have.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like making sure students know that I, as a native speaker, make mistakes as well. As long as students know that everyone makes mistakes, then it will create a great learning environment for a student. I am here to create confidence in the student and help them be successful.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
The best way to learn a language is by practicing. I am open to trying anything a student might find helpful, and incorporating the material through these means.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I, myself, learned a third language for my bachelor's. I know the struggles of learning a language, and can understand their point of view and headaches. I want students to know that they can talk to me as a friend that wants to see them succeed.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Each student learns at a different pace. I would provide feedback in what I notice they are having more difficulty with, and work with them to get better.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I am a flexible person, and I am available to work with students at different times of the day. If a student is having difficulty with a specific area, I will make sure to incorporate a space in our tutoring session to practice until they are feeling confident enough to move on.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I like using Spanish search engines, Spanish articles, tv shows, books, and lots of conversation.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would find something the student enjoys, for instance, a tv show, and motivate them to watch their show in Spanish rather than in English. It helps the student learn vocabulary and keep up at the same time. It is engaging, and it leaves room for the student to ask questions. It also helps to re-watch movies they've already seen and watch them in Spanish.
