What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would evaluate where a student is at with the material and establish where they need to go from there.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I believe that repetition is always a good method when learning. I would make sure that a student can continuously get the answer right on several different problems when making sure that they understand the material.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I strive to be as hands on as possible so that students can be immersed in the material. In foreign languages, it is especially important that students work with the material actively, not passively.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by letting them take the lead. I can give them the instruction and materials, but by letting them take the lead in a session, they will learn much more.
