Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is based on meeting the needs of each student. Whether it be through hands on learning or more visual learning, my goal is to find ways to convey the lesson material in different ways that best accommodate each student achieve their goal.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My typical first session will be getting to know the student, figuring out the student's learning style, and going over some preliminary questions the student may have for me. After getting through that, I'd try to get to some more material based questions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Through leading questions and encouraging students to try problems on their own is how I help students become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd help a student stay motivated by keeping the end goal in mind and by also creating short-term goals to keep focused on.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd ask where they are having trouble or figure out what is causing the difficulty. Next I'd try to find a different approach that will better help the student understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By breaking down the question and picking out key words and concepts throughout the piece they are reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I've found that keeping the student engaged as well as asking leading questions helps students learn better.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By setting short-term goals and showing them that after a bit of work they will soon understand it.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Practice questions, review of major concepts, and having them teach me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence through encouragement of small triumphs and continual reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by first asking them what they think they are having issues with, then by observing how they perform on particular problems.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt by changing my approaches on learning. Some people need to see how to do something before working through a problem, whereas others would rather work through the problem in order to understand better.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I can use anywhere from textbooks, to online sources, to my own experiences to help teach.
