I think it is always best to start with simple introductions and discussions about what interests them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Generating an enthusiasm is the most important step to getting someone to become independent. Learning must not be seen as a chore.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Making things fun and not "workish" is important to keep someone engaged.
