What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy of teaching is to share my knowledge with others to make more culturally aware students.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to get to know the student first and find what kinds of hobbies they enjoy doing. I like to break the ice first and make the student understand that I am helpful and full of knowledge on their topics of need.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can assist a student by becoming an independent learner by modeling the exercise they are supposed to do, having them show me what they would do, and then having them do it themselves.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I keep praising the students' worth. It helps that the students feel confident about themselves.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
We take brain breaks. Then, we come back and target the skill or concept they are struggling with. We find different ways of making the concept work and stick with them.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students by breaking down the sentences and the words they are struggling with. We go back and look at the words, and I ask the students what they think the words/sentences mean. If they are still struggling, we keep at it until they understand the concept.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Strategies I have found helpful when working with a student are making sure the student feels confident about their own abilities. A student will feel better about themselves when they know they CAN do the work.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Honestly, being silly and a little goofy about the subject. I sing songs to my students to make them feel a little bit more excited about the subject that they are struggling with.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I use flashcards, pneumonic devices, YouTube videos, Checks for Understanding, etc. to make sure the student understands what is going on.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build a student's confidence in the subject by first building up THEIR confidence. A student will do better when their own self-esteem is proven with their self-worth.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I discuss their grades with them, as well as their academic background and history.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I evaluate their needs and tailor lessons to their needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use manipulatives, flashcards, videos, songs, breakdowns of sentences/material, games, etc.
