I am new to Houston and looking to getting back into tutoring because I enjoy working with students and helping to understand the material they are learning in class.
I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Chemistry. After returning home to Chicago, I was fortunate to find multiple opportunities doing exactly what I enjoyed the most--TEACHING. I taught science in an alternative high school. When that program was discontinued, I worked as a substitute teacher for 1 year. All this time, I was also tutoring for a small local tutoring company. I tutored all levels of math and also chemistry. While I had the opportunity to work with many students and was requested by my students' parents when they returned for the next school year, my favorite success story I like to share is working with the owner's daughter. I only met with her 4 times to help her prepare for a math final. Math was one of the subjects she struggled with the most. The owner informed me that after her tutoring sessions she received her highest grade ever in math on the final, a B+. The only reason I was not able to continue working with the owner's daughter for the next school year was because I moved to Kansas City with my husband for his job. In Kansas City, I chose to substitute almost full-time; approximately 90% of my assignments were math and science. The teachers knew I was knowledgeable in these areas and appreciated that I was able to teach a lesson and confidently answer student questions. I was frequently requested back to the same classrooms for this reason.
I enjoy math and I understand the difficulties students have with putting together several concepts. I really enjoy chemistry too; I've had fewer opportunities to tutor chemistry because fewer students are willing to venture into what appears to them to be a difficult subject.
I enjoy working with students of all ages, including adults that have returned to college.
I am still getting to know Houston. I'm a busy mommy and my most important trip of the day is to go to the park with my little girls. When I do have spare time, I enjoy baking a variety of goodies, reading, watching movies, and dancing to music on the radio.
