Hi, I'm Susie! I've been an educator for over 30 years as a classroom teacher, reading interventionist, and instructional coach and I've spent my career helping students become confident readers, writers, and learners. I work with students on reading, literacy, and science skills at every level: young readers learning to decode, middle schoolers building comprehension and writing skills, and students preparing for tests. I'm a two-time National Board Certified teacher with certifications in Orton-Gillingham, LETRS, and other proven, evidence-based reading methods, such as EBLI. My philosophy is simple: every student can learn to read and write well they just need instruction that matches how their brain works. I find exactly where a student is getting stuck and we build from there, step by step. Sessions with me are active, encouraging, and focused, because confidence is half the battle. I especially love working with students who've started to believe they're "just not a reader." I've watched hundreds of kids prove that wrong and I'd love to help your student do the same. Let's get started!

I am pursuing a bachelor's at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in pure math and physics. I have been tutoring for a little over a year and I love seeing students grow in their math capabilities. I tutor many math and physics subjects but my favorite is calculus 1 because of how much students' perspectives of math change while taking the course. I have scored well on the SAT and many AP exams.

Having taught students of all ages and from diverse backgrounds at the collegiate-level for over seven years, I learned the importance of building a supportive and collaborative individualized instruction. At times comprehension and excelling at a certain subject, particularly where the student may have some hesitation to the material, I encourage examining a variety of texts both literary and cultural relevant to the subject, students then make the connections and can learn behaviors and thinking skills that arise from themselves rather than from teaching directives. It is problem-solving in action and that to me is inspirational; in fact: my passion for tutoring and teaching derives from witnessing these successes.I encourage students to use their life experience and academic backgrounds to such as essays from writers, artists, and critics that function in a dialogue with each other, or not; manifestos; advertisements; blogs; popular television, movies, and music; and fashion. By broadening the idea of a “text” and by moving beyond visceral responses such as “I liked this” or “this was no good,” can be best accomplished by connecting the student's interests in the world to the material in front of them. This allows the material to be learned to dilate with the student and provides the student a respite from directly tackling the material. The subjects I like to tutor most are any that involve language: literature, philosophy, art history, social sciences, history, and pop culture. In accord with my passion for teaching, I also hold equal passion for writing and art. I hold an MFA from Columbia University, School of the Arts, completing a creative thesis, a manuscript of poetry, and a critical thesis, an academic essay focusing on the employment of poetic techniques in advertising campaigns. In my personal life I love the movies, pop culture, museums, walking, watching basketball, football, and boxing. Baseball is best seen live. But most important is spending time with my family.

Howdy Friends!Growing up with a brother who was a human encyclopedia, I learned from a young age that learning doesn't come to everyone at the same rate. However, I didn't let that keep me down. I went on to have a very successful academic (and now professional) career. I want to pay it forward and help those who may be struggling to learn about subjects that I love. Sometimes all it takes is a positive attitude and a new perspective!

PERSONAL STATEMENTI earned a Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Drake University, Master's degrees in both Educational Administration and Special Education, and a doctorate from the University of the Nebraska at Omaha, NE.I tutor all elementary and middle school general education subjects and special education for those students as well. My favorite subjects to tutor are math, science, and social studies. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with our large extended family, spending time with our dog, reading, and traveling when I can. When I was a child, I always looked for role models and one of my elementary teachers, Mrs. John stepped up as a very influential figure in my life. Her personal interest helped me know I could be successful in life. I have tried to use the same inspiration I received so many years ago in my career in education for the past 40 years. As a teacher, I believe that a desire to teach, enthusiasm, and dedication for your subject are three key elements for teaching, but we must also care deeply for children. We must have the will to develop strong relationships with learners to enhance the learning process. As an experienced teacher, I am excited about the opportunity to continue to apply my skills as a tutor. I have face-to-face classroom experience at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have taught general and special education. I have taught face-to-face classes, hybrid, and on-line classes at the university level.I am enthusiastic about trying to influence my students by showing interest in them, being committed to developing relationships with them as learners, and by implementing teaching strategies to help them learn. In these ways, I hope to make learning memorable and transform the way they view their world.

I believe knowledge is the best and most applicable skill you can have, that's why I love tutoring. Everyone has those subjects they need a little more understanding in, and I love helping people answer their own questions. Getting the right answer is always important, but I think understanding how you got there is the most integral part. I love working with people to find out how they approach a problem and seeing how they think gives me a better understanding on how to help them. After working with countless high school student, during high school, I know there is no single, definitive way to solve a problem. I encourage kids to come up with there own path towards solving a problem while I guide them along the way. This is my first professional tutoring job and I look forward to finding more ways to help students learn in a manner that they like. Probably my favorite subjects to teach are science and math course, i.e. algebra, chemistry, physics, etc. I love these subjects because they are the fundamentals of the entire universe. Right now, I'm working towards a degree in computer science, but I've thought about switching that over to mathematics-well because I love math. Outside of school subjects; I play video games, do cross country, and like watching documentaries and superhero films.

I've spent the majority of my life being a student of the financial realm; and to this day, constantly work to perfect my craft. I believe a lot of work done by financial professionals is noble, they have the ability to help others retire comfortably, protect themselves and loved ones against unfortunate circumstances, help others as well as many other goals they have. I believe there is a right way to do business and I strive to help others in their efforts to do business the right way. My expertise started long ago when I received my Bachelor's in Finance from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. During that time, I obtained my Series 7 and 66 licenses. Shortly after obtaining those licenses, I then obtained the Series 4, 24 and 53 licenses. To continue my pursuit of growth, I went on to earn my Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. A short time later, I enrolled at Kansas State University and earned a Master's degree in Personal Financial Planning. Recently, I've earned the Behavioral Financial Advisor (BFA) designation and the Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP) designation. I've worked in several industry roles from client service, back office roles, compliance, management, personal advising and planning and retirement consulting. When I'm not focusing on my craft I enjoy spending time with my family and am an avid college and professional football fan.
