I'm often asked about my motivation to become (and stay) a teacher. My answer is always the same:The look on students' faces when they get something - it is priceless. Learning is hard, teaching is harder, but when the two meet and success is the outcome, nothing is more rewarding.I've been teaching at the college level since 1992 and have seen hundreds of my students go on to become happy and successful in their chosen careers. Some of those students, and many others who were not in my class, came to me for tutoring help since I teach a variety of difficult courses including: Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, andGeneral & Advanced Biology. It's been even more satisfying tutoring students than teaching a classroom - and even more successful for them. I have a very comfortable yet effective method of engaging my students and helping them learn. I use real-world examples and applications as much as possible to enable my students to grasp difficult concepts or topics. Since I have a wide variety of hobbies, personal interests, and experiences in the world, I have much to draw upon. As a small sampler, I enjoy and engage in sports such as tennis and swimming; have multiple hobbies such as chess, and coin & stamp collecting; and I have traveled many parts of the United States and held a variety of jobs from taxi driver to quality control engineer. Perhaps the best indicator of my success as a tutor is the recurring students who come back to me over and over, and the recommendations I get from them that sends me more than I can handle. My education includes a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Cornell University; a Master of Science in Applied Biology from Purdue University, and graduate courses in Animal Physiology, Symbiosis, and Educational Research from Western Kentucky University (online) and Florida Atlantic University, respectively. I taught at Palm Beach State College as an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences from 1992 to 2009, and have taught at Keiser University, West Palm Beach as a Professor of Biological Sciences since 2010.

I am a graduate of Purdue University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and am currently pursuing a doctorate at ASU. Since graduation, I have held two professional engineering positions. One involved overseeing operations for Halliburton Energy Services in Colorado and the second was as a project engineer for LyondellBasell in New Jersey. Between these positions, I returned to my undergraduate campus in Indiana. I performed research for one of the leading professors in my engineering concentration and often tutored co-workers in college math and physics classes. While studying for the GRE, I developed my own study system and approach which has been passed on and used by several friends. My teaching style can be best described as knowledge gap identification. I believe that the single most important thing for learning, after attitude, is identifying exactly what information has been miscommunicated. After this step, almost any person can learn any subject with enough patience.I moved to Arizona after accepting ASU's offer and have enjoyed the state since. During my first semester, I worked as a teaching assistant and was responsible for four lab sections of undergraduate engineering students. At the same time, I also performed robotics research in the Biomechatronics Lab under the direction of Dr. Veronica Santos. This research continued until her departure to UCLA. At this time, I am beginning work in the SpaceTREx laboratory and will be focused on space-oriented robotics. In my spare time I like to hike, rock climb, read, work on my novel, and build gadgets.

I graduated last May from St. Olaf College with degrees in Physics and Trombone Performance (both Summa Cum Laude) and am currently working on my MS in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue! Between all of these experiences and my various test scores across the years, I am enthusiastic to offer tutoring up to the college level in physics, mathematics, and music - when tutoring I absolutely live for those "lightbulb moments" when a concept(s) finally fits into place for a student. I have 3 semesters of formal experience tutoring/teaching college students both online and in-person at St. Olaf College and Purdue University as well as years of informal experience with high schoolers, each in both individual and group settings. My primary methods emphasize tangible connections and examples to help explain various concepts while also taking time to understand any gaps that may have cropped up in a student's learning for a variety of reasons. This yielded especially productive results during my recent TA stint at Purdue, where I ensured students' understanding of various concepts in thermodynamics (entropy, enthalpy being prime examples) was not relegated to being variables on paper, but genuine physical properties with meaning for the relevant systems despite a remarkable variance in the professors' pedagogical quality and style of instruction.

After graduating high school as valedictorian, I studied Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. I chose engineering because of my love of math & science subjects that came naturally to me. During my junior year, a professor I worked with strongly suggested I pursue grad school, telling me he thought it would be a good fit. So after graduation, I attended the Georgia Institute of Technology to earn a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I took advantage of Georgia Tech's study abroad program living and learning in eastern France, where I became fluent in the French language.Upon earning my degree, I was hired by Fortune Global 500 company in the Energy Sector where I held various technical positions worldwide in countries like Kazakhstan, Turkey, Scotland and France before coming back to the US in 2011.I tutor math and science, with a focus on more advanced subjects such as Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, Calculus and Physics. These are the subjects I enjoy most because they allow us to model and understand the world we live in.I have benefited from tutoring in the past, and I believe a mentor can help fill the gaps in a student's education. I do this by explaining concepts and ideas in ways that are easier to understand and relate to. Education is extremely important for success in life. Several members of my family have lifted themselves into success and happiness through education.I enjoy staying active by playing sports and partaking in the great outdoors. Travel is a passion of mine, whether exploring a new continent or something around the corner. Scuba diving is a recent hobby I've added. I also got minors in Entrepreneurship and Innovation as well as Communication. Since graduation, I trained in Charlotte, NC for Ferguson Enterprises as an HVAC Sales Management Trainee and now work in the Chicago, IL branch. My tutoring endeavors started when I was in middle school, working with elementary students. As I progressed through high school I helped students in 6th through 8th grades and covered math and science courses. I continued to tutor all the way through college, working with middle school and high school students. Through those years of my learning, I also have spent numerous hours volunteering through many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Society of Women in Engineering, and Circle K. Some of my favorite experiences were helping students with homework in after-school programs. Being able to make a difference in other's lives was a great feeling for me.The subjects of my interest including Science, Math, and English I believe were spawned by generations of women in my family who were in Education. From my great grandaunt who was a principal to my grandmothers -- one was an associate professor of finance, another a high school English Department head. Several of my aunts and cousins are past and present teachers of English, Speech and Journalism, as well as district administrators. My focus on the sciences and related math I attribute to a number of men in my family who are or were in Engineering fields. Personally, because of my many years in Math classes, I find the challenge of numbers to be the subject I see as the most fulfilling focus for helping students. I like to teach the basics of Math in a way that gives the student confidence in their current knowledge and the courage to build upon that. I look forward to seeing the signs of comprehension that come with each segment of learning.Outside of work, I enjoy painting, playing soccer, swimming, and sailing; things I have done -- and plan to keep doing -- for most of my life!

Calculus is also inspiring to me because of its real world applications and uses. My tutoring style focuses on how the student learns, not simply what they are learning. I like to figure out how the student effectively learns (are they a visual leaner? more of an auditory learner? a combination of both?) and tailor my tutoring accordingly. I describe myself as a life-long learner, as I try to learn something new every single day. Learning can improve your life in so many ways. My favorite part of teaching is when a student who has struggled to grasp a concept finally has the "AHA!" moment.
