How can a GRE tutor help you?

Applying to graduate school is a major step a student takes in their educational journey. This milestone may be a complicated and extensive process, particularly when factoring in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The score that a student receives on the GRE may have a major impact on their chances of getting accepted to the graduate schools of their choice. Studying and preparing ahead of time for the GRE is a must. Students who attempt to do this on their own often find themselves overwhelmed and stressed. They don't know where to start or what areas to focus on and how to best prepare for them. If you are one of these students, consider working with a personal GRE tutor. There are plenty of GRE tutors in Memphis, TN, whom Varsity Tutors may help you connect with so that come test day, you are as confident and prepared as possible.

Personal GRE tutors are experts on the exam. They've taken the test themselves and received a high score. They know the best strategies and resources to use when studying. Your GRE tutor may share with you all of their insights and knowledge pertaining to the test. They may show you how to hone your writing skills so that the two essays you write for the exam are top-notch reflections of your compositional abilities. They may answer all of your questions regarding the quantitative portion of the exam, and they may present you with sample quantitative comparison and data interpretation problems so that you're not surprised on test day. Your tutor may show you what the exam scorers are looking for in your argumentative critique in the argument task section, and they may give you tips on how to earn a high score in the verbal reasoning portion.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

GRE Tutoring review by Gerard in Memphis, TN
Today the student and I started by working on some coordinate geometry. We discussed some general characteristics of lines, how to write them in slope intercept form and how to work with the equation describing a line. We also talked about the relationship between parallel and perpendicular slopes, as well as the formulas for midpoint, slope and distance. We did some examples to illustrate how these concepts will be used on the GRE. We also talked about functions and corresponding intersections and did some examples to work with these topics as well. I will send her some practice problems to reinforce the topics we went over today and next week we'll work on triangle geometry. For the last third of our session we worked on some practice reading comprehension sections from her book and the online material.

GRE Tutoring review by Alexis in Memphis, TN
The student took a full length practice test last week and we reviewed his math and verbal scores. He and I are both confident that he can increase his scores, so will really focus on studying for the next month and then re-assess his graduate school options. He and I began to work on vocabulary, focusing on strategies for fill-in-the-blank questions and learning root words.

GRE Tutoring review by Anna in Memphis, TN
The student's main concern is her preparation for the GRE. She wants to go to graduate school in clinical psychology, which requires very high test scores. Though her pretest performance is in no way poor, she wants to bring it up before she takes the actual exam. Our main focus together will be preparing for the GRE verbal test. Her main area to work on is vocabulary. I have recommended a combination of word lists and Greek and Latin word roots in order to help with this issue. During our session, we practiced analyzing the words in each question in order to figure out what fits best, with a focus on figuring out what as many words as possible mean. I have been helping her build confidence in her ability to find similar words when it is her only real option on a question. After looking up a word, we are practicing practical usage so that we can help build her vocabulary. I have given her the homework of practicing the words she did not know on the practice tests she has taken and also obtaining a resource on word roots. I believe these two strategies will bring up her verbal score to where it needs to be.

GRE Tutoring review by Erica in Memphis, TN
We covered strategies for each major type of verbal and quantitative comparison question. We covered strategies for problem solving questions in the most depth, including plugging in numbers, backsolving and strategic guessing. The student struggled with text completion questions. He had a positive attitude towards the material reviewed. He felt the questions were too easy, but provided alternative material that he found helpful. I included strategies for finding key words in text completion and reading comprehension questions. I also included strategies for problem solving and quantitative reasoning questions and shortcuts for percentage, geometry and numeric principle questions. I left him with practice standard deviation questions and encouraged him to continue practicing the strategies we discussed.
