I am currently pursuing my education at Stony Brook University, where I am majoring in Asian and Asian American studies/Teacher Preparation Program in Chinese with a minor in Chinese studies. I am working towards becoming a Chinese teacher. I can tutor various subjects, but my main focus is ESL, Chinese, and K-8 ELA. ESL/Chinese is my favorite subject to tutor because as a first-generation American-born Chinese student, I had to learn English in elementary school while balancing the language barrier at home, and this experience fostered a desire in me to help others facing similar obstacles. I want to ensure that students feel supported and confident in their learning journey. During the summers of my freshman and sophomore year in college, I had the opportunity to tutor students in grades one through six at two summer programs, many of whom were ESL learners. I taught engaging lesson plans, created weekly quizzes/tests to see where they are at, and conducted one on one's for students needing additional help.
My teaching philosophy revolves around continuous learning, both for myself and my students. I believe in fostering a supportive and engaging environment where students feel comfortable to explore, ask questions, and make mistakes. My tutoring style is adaptable, incorporating different methods depending on the student's learning style, but I always aim to make learning enjoyable and meaningful.
Outside of academia, I like to play badminton, cook Chinese food, and bake desserts. I am an active member of the badminton club at Stony Brook University, where I've made connections with others who share the same interests. I also enjoy Chinese dramas, variety shows, and films, which have helped me improve my language skills and deepen my appreciation for the culture.
Ultimately, I am passionate about helping students because seeing them gain confidence, overcome obstacles, and succeed in their learning journey is incredibly rewarding for me. I view every teaching opportunity as a chance to not only impart knowledge but also learn from my students and colleagues. I hope to continuously improve as an educator and provide the best learning experience possible.
