I have recently acquired my Bachelor's in English from Virginia Commonwealth University. I graduated a Distinguished English Major. I am applying for my MFA in poetry next. I have had over two years of experience working with college-level students at the remedial level and at senior level and I've worked a lot with non-traditional trajectory students. I enjoy it quite a bit. I felt rewarded when one of the students I was working closely with turned his work ethic around and began to take his writing seriously. His teacher said it was because of me. That was an incredible feeling. I was very proud of the both of us.

I tutor creative writing (creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction), I assist with editing essays (and having just polished a longform essay thesis I have experience in both shortform and thesis-length work), I can assist with writing personal statements, I have public speaking experience, and I can assist with reading comprehension/literary analysis.

My favorite subject to tutor is creative writing because I am so passionate about it myself. My philosophy when it comes to tutoring is about extending grace toward the self and others. People need time to refine and internalize their skills. If students can acquire a skill immediately then that's fantastic but it's important to exercise patience and getting to know your learning style so others know how to best adapt to your needs. I can help with learning styles as well.

Hobbies

I love to paint - I use oil paint to make abstract art. Most recently I was interested in cubism and suprematism. I love to write poetry. I write two poems a week minimum and am hosting a workshop with former classmates and coworkers for poetry as well as having started a fiction-writing accountability group to keep myself and others on track with writing until our goals are met. I enjoy hiking with my dog and pickling vegetables and making tinctures. I'm learning how plants can become allies toward health and I'm interested in the practice of medicine as preventative and every-day care rather than something that simply attacks the symptoms. I'm interested in the body as a system. I love to read, especially poetry, essays, and POC-led/written speculative fiction/scifi/fantasy. I also like to read about African Traditional Diaspora Religions.
