It's true: I diagram sentences for fun.

I play with language the way that other people play board games or musical instruments or sports. For the record, I also play board games and a couple of musical instruments, and I sometimes ride my sleek blue road bike, whose name is Aster, or my staunch grey hybrid bike, whose name is Mollusk. But at the end of the day, it is the chance to play with words moving them around, mixing them up, making them sing that truly brings me delight.

Playing with words is not, however, my only passion. I also take great delight in helping students become more confident and efficient readers, writers, thinkers, and users of language. I've combined these passions into a fifteen-year career as an educator at the post-secondary level, having taught the following subjects at the following institutions:

+Writing for both native- and nonnative-users of English at Northern Arizona University, the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan), and Denison University (Granville, Ohio)

+Beginner-level German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

+Intermediate- and advanced-level ESL (English as a Second Language) at Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, Arizona) and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

+ESL teaching methods at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Additionally, I've facilitated over 1500 hours of writing workshop sessions at Northern Arizona University, the University of Michigan, and Denison University. During these sessions, I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students from a wide variety of academic and professional disciplines to polish individual pieces of writing and to develop more efficient writing habits. This work is much like the freelance editing and writing consultation work that I have performed since October of 1996, when my offer to proofread a friend's writing assignment morphed into an informal business for family and friends who needed a second set of eyes on a piece of writing.

My experience as a teacher, tutor, and writing consultant is supplemented and informed by my academic degrees in languages, language acquisition, and language pedagogy. I hold a BA in Modern Languages with an emphasis on German Literature from Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS my hometown), an MA in German Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ), and a PhD in ESL Teacher Education and Education Policy Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

I recently "retired" from my full-time teaching career in academia so that I could accomplish the following goals: 1) live closer to family, 2) concentrate on my own creative writing, and 3) offer my services as a tutor and writing consultant to a broader audience of students including you!

I hope to hear from you soon, so that we can work together on your development as a reader, a writer, a thinker, and a user of language. While writing is my favorite subject to tutor, I am also happy to accept tutoring appointments in the following subjects:

+Beginner-level German
+English as a Second Language at any level of proficiency
+Adult literacy
+Public speaking, and
+English grammar or syntax.

Bis bald / See you soon!
