What is your teaching philosophy?
All teachers know that the individual students who come together in a course make up a unique dynamic; hence no two courses are the same. Consequently, flexibility is important to keep in mind. If I feel that I am not meeting my objectives, or if a lesson or activity does not seem to be working, I try something different. While it is rewarding to see student progress, to see engagement, self-realization, broadening, and student enjoyment of the course, teaching is also rewarding to me. This is one of the most important parts of teaching, for if the teacher is not enjoying the course, the students are not likely to enjoy it, either. Finally, for all that I hope my students take away from my courses, I always take away something, too. Even if this goal is a bit selfish, learning from my students is one of the best things about teaching, and I most certainly consider this a vital part of my teaching philosophy.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I like to assess what the student expects from me, how the student learns best, and what they want out of our tutoring sessions. Then the specific issues/subject matter will be addressed.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will employ students with strategies, both general and subject-specific, that they can use autonomously.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I love to motivate students! In general I am enthusiastic about the subjects I teach and tutor, and that enthusiasm inspires others. I also believe that encouragement is motivating!
