I started teaching while an undergrad at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, taking on the role of Teacher's Assistant to a Film Professor at Amherst College. After that I became a corp member of Teach For America Hawaii. Through this program I gained teaching experience first in Phoenix, Arizona, where I spent six weeks teaching 6th grade math. For the following two years I taught first grade in Pahala, HI.
What makes me a great tutor is a passion for education and personal relationships. I have always taken pride in academic achievement, and I am able to share that enthusiasm for accomplishment with my students through engaging teaching strategies as well as forging interpersonal relationships.
My experiences teaching have led me to realize that learning is a complex process that requires more than academic content. Creating a positive environment in the classroom (or wherever we decide to do our learning) makes learning exciting. Grasping difficult concepts is a whole lot easier when the process is fun! I bring energy and empathy into my instruction, and build personal relationships with my students, which can help make things that are "boring"or "too hard" a challenge that we both want to overcome. Guiding students to achieve their goals is what drew me to the field of education, and tutoring allows me to invest my energy in those successes. Let's accomplish our goals together!
