After I retired from being a research biologist and university professor, I started tutoring. I love it when a student has an aha moment and I know that the student understands a concept that was a mystery to them previously. I have the ability to take concepts and teach them in different ways. I tailor my tutoring to fit the learning style of the student. I think that is really important because it is very hard for a visual learner to learn from just listening. I also engage the student in learning. For example, having them label a diagram that I have just talked about. Most important -I encourage my students to ask questions, make comments, even disagree with me. I like making math and science come alive for students. I have successfully worked with elementary, middle school, and high school students. I am also the mother of a 16 year old high school student.
