"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest"- Benjamin FranklinI'm a Senior at UNC-Charlotte. I double major in Psychology and Anthropology and have a proven track record of success in Language Arts. My teaching method focuses more on retention and complete mastery of subjects, as opposed to learning designed around specific tests. Despite my teaching style, I've earned high scores on every standardized test I've ever taken. My goal in tutoring is to help encourage others to enjoy learning as much as I do!

I achieved my undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Connecticut. Soon afterward, I left the US to teach mathematics, physics, and science to island peoples on remote islands in the Pacific Ocean area known as Micronesia. From there, I travelled to Africa and taught mathematics of all levels, grades 6 to 12, under the British international curriculum at an international school in central Tanzania. I then shifted back the US to teach at a high school in Massachusetts near to where I grew up, while completing my master's degree in mathematics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. My latest, and perhaps my last, international adventure has been the last few years living in the capital of Ethiopia, teaching the International Baccalaureate curriculum at an international school in Addis Ababa. Between my teaching, I tutor students of all levels, most often in preparation for standardized tests, like the IGCSE, A-levels, SATs, and the IB, among others. When I was not involving myself in education, I was DJing at festivals and events in and around the towns or cities where I was residing at the time.

I am a current undergraduate student at Columbia University in New York City, pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in History and Economics. These are two of the subjects that I enjoy tutoring the most, but I also have a penchant for tutoring and learning about math and literature. I am passionate about tutoring because I benefited from the personalized guidance of great tutors in my past and I really enjoy seeing students push themselves and develop an appreciation for subject areas or even the mental exercise of test-taking thanks to tutoring. I also believe that tutoring a subject area is the greatest way to maintain and develop understanding of its material for both the student and the tutor. I was an active tutor in high school in mathematics and history and as I take more classes in college, I look forward to tutoring students in those in which I understood the material really well. In my spare time, I enjoy reading about history, camping, biking, and traveling when I can (or exploring the incredible city of New York)!

How did a history teacher become my favorite instructor when I am way more interested in other subjects? Passion. His passion was contagious; despite the huge range of social sciences offered at Ohio State, I took Ancient World History and Classical Greek History because of his 7th grade social studies seminar course on ancient societies. When I tutor English or Math, I emulate his passion. I can't help myself! In fact, I earned an English Degree in addition to my Psychology BA because I enjoy reading and writing so much. I'm not just a book worm though. I'm a huge sports fan (especially for my Buckeye Football National Champs!), I'm a total gym rat, and I have the stereotypical love for all things girly: hair, makeup, fashion, etc. Most importantly, however, I love teaching. I utilize my psychology experience to foster a comfortable environment for my students and help them know they are safe to ask questions. I work very hard to ensure that my students and I are on the same page and I won't move on to another task until they feel ready. I'm here to make difficult subjects fun, exciting, and seem easy.

I recently graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in December 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience and will be attending the University of Connecticut School of Medicine this coming fall.I have consistently played the role of a student mentor throughout high school and my undergraduate experience. My main objective when guiding students, whether their goal is to determine a fitting career path, ace an in-class exam, or prepare for a grueling standardized test, is to instill self-confidence in them. I try to not only help them develop lifelong critical-thinking skills, but also urge them to assertively believe in their personal abilities. If students dedicate themselves fully to the task at hand and have the genuine desire to succeed, then I think they can accomplish almost anything.During my junior and senior year at Michigan, I was a study group leader for both General Chemistry and Animal Physiology at the University’s Science Learning Center. This experience helped me develop essential leadership and facilitative skills to engage my students in active discussion and ingrain the course material. I was attentive to each student’s unique learning style and speed. In order for them to focus beyond rote memorization, I encouraged students to ask each other questions and apply the concepts to real-word scenarios. In addition, working as an advisor at my university's Career Center during my final semester exposed me to a variety of students with diverse cultural, social, and academic backgrounds. I was enthusiastic to not only discuss their academic goals, but also get to know the students on a more personal level. By connecting with them both intellectually and personally, I could attain a better picture of how and why they were making particular career decisions and understand them through a more holistic lens.I feel confident helping students in math and different subjects in science, such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Physiology, and Psychology. This can be introductory material to advanced concepts that appear on exams such as SAT subject tests or the MCAT. In addition, I have taken intensive writing courses and received training in writing personal statements that has provided me with skills to help students with their writing and reading abilities.I consider myself a motivated, easy-going, and compassionate individual that loves learning while also passing knowledge on to others. As a student on the brink of beginning a career in medicine, I realize that learning is a lifelong process and that it is critical to establish solid learning strategies early on. With my patient and attentive personality, I hope to help students work on their weaknesses, bolster their strengths, mature as individuals, and to of course have fun while doing it!
