About Me

I am a student at Cornell University studying Chemical Engineering and Computer Science. I'm living in Tarrytown right now and can help your son or daughter in math, science, or SAT/ACT prep! Over the past 5 years, I've accumulated many hours of tutoring experience. Some of the subjects I tutor include:-HS / AP Chemistry-HS / AP Physics-All Math Levels (Algebra, Trig, Precalc, Calculus, etc)- SATII Math (Both levels)-SAT / ACT Math- ACT ScienceOne of my core teaching methods is getting the student to thoughtfully approach questions and logically approach problems. I believe strongly that a student should be guided through problems rather than simply told whether they are right or wrong (that's what an answer key is for!). A tutor should provide feedback on their thought processes as well as follow through all possible choices when given options such as multiple choice. This way, students can learn to identify the right answer. My age gives me an advantage in that I have been in the shoes of all of my students not too many years ago. Not only do I currently use the information/skills that I help students acquire, but I believe I can act as a role model to encourage students that working hard pays off, and it is in fact cool to succeed in math and science. There is a huge reward for diligence, hard work, and success, and I try to instill these in every person I assist. My coursework has included Differential Equations, Multivariable Calculus, Discrete Math, etc. as well as lots of Physics courses (Heat and Mass Transfer, Mechanics, E&M, Fluid Mechanics), so you can be sure Physics and Math are my thing. Please consider me in helping you or your child, and I will do just that, to the best of my abilities.

Q&A with Jonathan

I place an emphasis on problem solving. We work through problems, and I challenge the student to really understand the problem. For example, I'll ask, "Is this the best or fastest way to solve the problem given the constraints?" Or, "What if we changed this number? What happens now?" We also dive into specific issues that the student has to iron out any deficiencies. If the student is having difficulty, I try to guide him/her to the right answer, as opposed to just saying what the answer is. This way the student struggles, first trying paths that may not be correct before reaching the correct answer. I feel this is important because A. it simulates an environment where the student must rely on their own problem solving abilities, and B. it shows the student that failure is a normal part of solving problems, and that it is OK to "not get it on the first try."
