I do not believe that anybody is "bad at math", some people simply learn in different ways or have not been given the chance to fully engage the subject to understand completely.I believe in teaching holistically, teaching understanding; I believe it is most important to understand the material on your own. Someone can tell you how to answer a problem, but the student will only progress when they can reach the solution on their own. I grew up in Shanghai, China where I got my undergraduate degree and started tutoring elementary and middle school students in Math. After that, I studied Library and Information Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. When I studied there, I tutored a high school student in Mandarin. I enjoy using stories in Chinese history and folklore while tutoring Mandarin. Because I believe that practice using a foreign language should be fun, I like designing dialogues with different scenarios for the class.

I am currently earning my Master's degree at Columbia University studying pre-modern Chinese Literature. I have been learning Mandarin since childhood and have taught beginner Chinese for a few years. I have also tutored college level English through Columbia's American Language Program. My students saw a dramatic increase in not only their writing abilities, but also their grades for each of the essays I helped them edit. I am a strong believer in pursuing higher education not only for professional or career purposes, but also for continuing to nurture one's intellectual curiosity. When I have free time, I enjoy spending time with friends, traveling around the world (Spain is my next destination on my list) and ballet.

For myself, the most important attributes in my teaching ability are passion, patience, and perception. Bringing life to the material with creativity and insight kindles and a greater interest in the learner. Having the patience to follow the plan of execution helps the student feel at ease and puts them in a better mindset for success. I graduated from the University of Michigan and received my Master degree in International and Regional Studies.I am a Chinese native speaker and I majored in Japanese at college. Before I came to the United States, I studied at Ritsumeikan University in Japan for three years.Language learning and teaching are my passions. I am open-minded and love to communicate.
