My academic strengths include:Writing - I am proficient many forms of academic writingHistory - I am expected to understand the political climate, government structure, and contemporary history of as many countries as I can handleStandardized test prep - I myself have taken many standardized examsOther social sciences - I took every AP social science course offeredI first started tutoring when I myself was in high school; helping the local middle school students with the homework they were most struggling with. I have two siblings who are now in high school turning to me for tips to succeed. I have also recently helped a number of my frightened peers practice and plan for their GREs. I understand the patience and the process involved in helping someone find their confidence and their mechanisms for success when approaching any subject material. My hobbies include reading. I read in parks, in cafés, on my couch, on vacation. To me, reading is the biggest luxury, and my favorite activity. When I am on break from school, I read nearly every day. Occasionally I also enjoy walking around the mountains and going to events in the city.

Though hard science can be scary, all my students have come to have a much deeper understanding of it which is a reward in itself. In my free time I enjoy traveling, playing music, and computer programming. In my free time I like to discover new things about the city

Every year the knowledge base of the world increases dramatically. More than just adding to the cumulative knowledge of the past, some would say that information is increasing at an exponential rate. Currently, students are being asked to absorb this information; often without a proper structure or guidance as to how this can be accomplished. Having already made this journey myself, I am very excited to join Varsity Tutors and to help motivated students in their quest for a meaningful role within society.

Hello, I am a recent graduate of the University of Washington where I received my Bachelor's degree in English. I graduated on the Dean's List and received a scholarship to fund an Undergraduate Research paper on American Literature. During my studies I volunteered at a Seattle School in ESL classrooms. There I worked with groups of students and individuals on a variety of subjects including english, math, and social studies. My tutoring style centers around exploring a students strengths and weaknesses and working realistically with them to improve their knowledge. Each student is an individual and needs individualized learning. But of course there are general strategies which I find effective. Although I am capable of tutoring a variety of subjects my specialty is English and writing essays as it is what I have the most experience in. My strategy for attacking any essay topic is to help tofirst gather information, plan out how to form it into an effective argument, and then get to writing. At this point I work with student from the sentence level through paragraph and finally to overall structure. My goal is to not only improve the current essay, but to imporve essay writing skills permanently.I am passionate about teaching, and find it constantly rewarding. Currently I am awaiting deployment to Sub-Saharan Africa with the Peace Corps where among other things I will teach. Aside from this I also enjoy playing guitar and listening to music, films, jogging, and just hanging out with friends. I grew up in Kirkland and have lived in Washington my whole life.

I am currently a senior at Smith College majoring in Sociology and concentrating in Women's Education. I have been tutoring for years, and due to my passion for reading, I concentrate mostly in English, Literature, Writing, Essay editing, and the reading and writing sections of the SAT. I love being able to help students discover a love of reading and writing like I have, and being able to apply it to their schoolwork and any other ways they need to succeed. For learning to be most successful, I believe in a collaborative, student-centered approach to tutoring, that is, to always keep in mind both what the student wants to learn and what they need to learn. It is important to make lesson plans as engaging and relevant to the student's life as possible, because this is the way to guarantee an interest in and love of learning. Although I know that my students have a lot to gain from me, I view tutoring as a two-way process in which both parties stand to learn from each other.
