I am a graduate of Dartmouth College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing. Since graduation, I've been working in journalism, writing for print and digital publications, as well as for broadcast programs. Writing is my passion - it's a skill I've honed through my own reporting, and through editing work by my colleagues, usually on tight daily deadlines. In my experience as a professional writer, I've found good habits and formulas to help make writing anything -- anything from 150 words to 3,000 words, or more! -- less overwhelming. Writing assignments don't have to be a chore, constrained by word counts and grammar rules. Well, sure, the grammar rules are important to know, but I find it more helpful to start any writing project with some basic questions: who, what, where, when, and how? How did it start? What's the ending? Did anything happen between point A and point B? What do YOU think is the most important thing to say about this topic? Once you get through those questions, the rest is just details - organizing notes, polishing, editing, and making it authentic to the writer's voice. I know writing is something that some students struggle with -- or think they struggle with. The important part isn't perfection -- it's finding your voice, that thing that no one else can imitate.
