Certified Orton Gillingham Tutor, Experienced in Working with Dyslexia and Tutoring Online

I was gratified when one of my students said "I like working with Ms. Phyllis because she is not boring like my other tutor." I try to make learning fun! I work hard to keep my students interested and engaged, because I know they will learn better and faster when they are enjoying our time together.
Although I am qualified by education and experience to teach reading, language arts, math, science and social studies, to pre-K through 12 and adults, I now focus on working with kids and young people who are dyslexic and want help in becoming good readers. Orton Gillingham is the most effective method for doing this. I am certified by the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana in Basic Orton Gillingham and have completed additional training in working with advanced learners.
I am a retired Methodist minister, mother of three grown sons, grandmother of 8, Cub Scout leader, former teacher, and lifelong learner. I have a bachelor's degree in Biology from Indiana University and two Master's degrees from Christian Theological Seminary. Before my ministry career I taught high school and junior high science and English. Since I retired from full-time ministry, I have tutored at 14th & Chestnut Community Center in Terre Haute IN, for ten years, working with both children and adults . In addition to doing youth ministry, I have also worked with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. I now have over 20 years of tutoring experience with most of it online during the last five years.
Drawing upon my background in counseling and my experience with children and youth, I help each learner build self-esteem and confidence. I encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning as they grow in their ability to do this. My students soon realize that I care as much about them as a person as about the subject we are working on. I sincerely want them to discover the excitement and joy of learning!
