I went to school in England, Scotland, Asia, and Africa. I joined the police in London at the age of 19. I passed all the police exams to become a senior officer. I set police exam questions in national promotion exams in England and Wales. Whilst being an active operational police officer I carried out funded research for the UK Government in the UK and Western European. I wrote a thesis based on this to obtain a Master of Philosophy degree from Bournemouth University. I specialised in neighbourhood policing, vehicle crime, anti-terrorism, and drug crime. When I retired from the police, I carried out funded doctoral research in the discipline of Geographical Information Science at University College London. I used police crime and incident data to map and analyse the geography of crime and policing. Whilst a PhD student I tutored second year Geography undergraduates and in my final year I taught undergraduate and post-graduate students as a university lecturer at Kingston University. As my PhD included detailed statistical analyses it qualified me to work in the Office for National Statistics working on economic data. I have voluntarily tutored and mentored young adults in Myanmar and subsequently online. I have voluntarily tutored a Geography Masters student whose dissertation was submitted for a national prize and won. I have also successfully tutored a Business Studies Master's student from southern Thailand and studying in Taiwan. Earlier in life I was the leader of a Church youth group for about 30 11to14-year-olds. That involved activity-based teaching. In the police, leading a team on numerous occasions I was involved in formal and informal teaching. My real talent is being able to quickly grasp what is required to pass exams and assignments to enable me to focus the students' efforts, skills, and thoughts to achieve that. My qualifications are in Geography, Criminal Law, Policing, Criminology, Statistics, and large Information Systems but I can tutor many other subjects if essay, dissertation, or thesis writing is a method of assessment. I have practical experience of project management; problem solving and change implementation. Being dyslexic myself and coming from a family of dyslexics I am empathetic with the strengths and weaknesses this brings to learning. Also having mentored and tutored students whose first language is not English I am sensitive for the need to take this into consideration when tutoring. I have a CELTA qualification for teaching English as a foreign language which helps in this regard.
