I am Alix, a Life Science Teacher at David W Carter High School. I began my teaching career in August 2017, three months after graduating from my alma mater; Midwestern State University. During the three months before starting my career, I enrolled in an alternative teaching program called Texas Teachers. This program was rigorous but was certainly a factor in ensuring my success in this field. My zeal for education and knowledge stems from the great influences who are my parents. My siblings and I were raised in a household with parents that allowed us to have big dreams but taught us to create goals to achieve those dreams. As my parents always said, "Dreams will remain dreams if we don't plan, create goals and fulfill those goals to allow those dreams to become a reality." Besides my parents, I've been very fortunate to have amazing teachers in my life from my Kindergarten teacher Ms. Justine to my high school English teacher Ms. Joseph. It is very important to have such solid foundations and influential teachers in and out of school as I am a product of just that. I understand the necessity of having those influences and how much of an impact they can be on a child.
Therefore, the reason for me to have the prestigious title of becoming a teacher to my students is to give to them what I've gotten from my teachers; the desire to acquire knowledge. I understand that we live in a time of instant gratification, social media, and the lack of wanting to learn from our students. However, this challenge is a challenge I am more than willing to take on. I aim to make learning as enjoyable as possible but most of all, effective. Being a tutor at Varsity Tutors will allow me to help students to understand how to study and to retain information. One-on-one tutoring is very instrumental in the success of a student. My specifically curated lesson plan will be tailored to their type of learning and will allow them to do exceed their expectations.
I have taught all levels of high school students. At David W Carter High School, I teach juniors and seniors. However, during the summer months, I've taught a combination of all four levels. I think it is important to teach various levels to be well equipped with the array of challenges that may arise at all levels. Over the two years of teaching, I have taught Biology and Environmental Systems.
I ensure that my students understand that I don't care about how smart they are; as long as they're willing to learn and put the necessary effort to learn and improve their skills, that's what matters. Understandably, not all my students even care about the coursework but it is my job to ensure that they learn that in life we're not always going to do what we want to do but everything worth doing is worth doing well.
